Did you watch the 2013 version of the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars? Did you have party with all your friends and talk about who was the best dressed, worst dressed?
I cannot tell a lie, I did watch some of it last night. Not for any other reason than it was on in my living room so I felt compelled to watch it. However, I have not seen any of the movies on the list. Nor has anyone else in my family. We seem to be late-bloomers when it comes to movies. Like, we might watch some of the nominted movies, i.e. Argo or Lincoln now.
Lots of buzz from last night was that the host wasn't that funny. Maybe it hit a lot of sour notes in terms of its questionably comedic, and in some cases downright offensive, bits, but in terms of advertising, ABC had a great great great day, which ultimately allows the audience to win too.
ABC sold out their ad space at about $1.7 million to $1.8 million per 30-second spot. That lands at number 1 for highest prices in last five years. AND, it resulted in the Oscars becoming available online, on mulitple sites, as of 6AM EST today - which was the first time in Oscars history this happened.
Of course it would've been better if they live-streamed the show last night, but it's all about the power of the buck. And with putting it online the following day, gives advertiser's the ability to spend more with ABC.
