CES 2017 Fallout: What’s next for the digital camera industry?

CES 2017 (formally known as the Consumer Electronic Show) is in full swing this week and has, undoubtedly, brought to light some exciting new gadgets hitting the market in 2017. With that said, the digital camera industry has been booming over the past couple of years and 2017 promises to be another big year for updated technology and exciting new features! In the following blog, we have taken a look at some of the recently announced products from five of the biggest digital camera distributors today and some of the most talked about rumors that avid photographers will be paying attention too as the year progresses.
Panasonic: The biggest news surrounding Panasonic is related to their upcoming release of the Lumix GH5. Although this device was officially announced last year, at this year’s CES 2017 they have officially released the pricing and specs information for the new device. One of the newest and coolest features of the Lumix GH5 is the 4K video recording at 60fps; in addition to taking photos at 6K quality. One of the last major specs worth of noting is that device boasts a newly developed 20.3MP Digital Live MOS sensor which will allow for users to reach incredible image quality! As of now, the Lumix GH5 is rumored to be released in late March 2017 for a market price of $1,999.99.
Sony: On the Sony front, some of the most recently released information is in regards to 6 new lenses that they will be releasing throughout 2017. Take a look below at the lenses set to be released by Sony.
1. 16-35mm f2.8
2. STF GM lens
3. Telephoto zoom lens
4. Telephoto prime lens
5. Wide-angle lens
6. Standard zoom lens
Another important rumor links Sony to using a full frame RGBW sensor in its future Sony A7S II. For those wondering what the RGBW sensor is, essentially, the sensor will increase the brightness in images by 32% and decrease color noise by 78%. For the rest of us, in layman’s terms, it will take really GREAT pictures!
Fujifilm: Introduced in 2017, Fujifilm have announced a “point-and-shoot” camera, the FinePix XP120. In terms of the specs for this new camera, it is rumored to include a 16.4 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor as well as a 3-inch LCD 920K-dot monitor. One of the features that separate the FinePix XP120 from other new cameras is its rugged nature. It boasts a claim of being both freeze proof and dust proof, while also being able to withstand falls from 1.75 meters. The rumored release of this device is in late February of this year and is going for an asking price of $229.95.
Canon: On Wednesday, Canon announced 4 new cameras to be released in 2017. See the upcoming models below:
• Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II – This camera includes a 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens as well as a 3-inch LCD.
• IXUS 190 & IXUS 185 – Both cameras contain a DIGIC 4+ image processor and a 20 megapixel CCD image sensor. They are also both classified as “point-and-shoot” cameras.
• PowerShot SX430 IS – This contains a 45x wide zoom lens, which is perfect for landscape photos! Much like the aforementioned cameras, it contains a DIGIC 4+ image processor and a 20 megapixel CCD image sensor. Unlike the IXUS 190 and IXUS 185, though, it includes with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for sharing files.
There are no set dates of release or announced pricing for the above cameras as of this blog posting.
Nikon: Revealed back in November, the Nikon D5600 is the next upcoming device to be released by this camera-distributing giant. This camera includes a brand new 24.2-megapixel DX-format with no low-pas filter. The biggest feature that is being introduced with this model is the SnapBridge technology, which incorporates Bluetooth technology. This allows the camera to successfully link with your other mobile device, for a quick file transfer. The camera body itself sells for $700.00.
