Apple introduced three new iPhones on September 9, 2026: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the new foldable iPhone Duo. While the Duo may be the most talked-about addition to Apple’s latest lineup, the iPhone 18 Pro brings several upgrades of its own, especially in camera, performance, and battery life.
If you already have the iPhone 17 Pro, you’re probably wondering whether those changes are enough to upgrade. And if you’re using an older Pro, you have another decision to make: get the latest model or look for a deal on the previous generation?
Let’s take a closer look at what’s new and what stayed the same.

If you put the iPhone 18 Pro next to the iPhone 17 Pro, you may have to look twice.
The iPhone 18 Pro keeps much of the same overall design as the iPhone 17 Pro, with the same dimensions, aluminum unibody, large camera plateau on the back, and Ceramic Shield front and back.
Both models have a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion and refresh rates up to 120Hz. Familiar features such as the Action button and Camera Control are still here.
There is one noticeable change on the front: the Dynamic Island has been redesigned and now takes up less physical space on the screen. But it can display up to three Live Activities at once (instead of two), giving you more information at a glance.
The iPhone 18 Pro also comes in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and the new Burgundy. The iPhone 17 Pro, by comparison, is available in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue.
The iPhone 17 Pro introduced the A19 Pro chip. The iPhone 18 Pro moves to the A20 Pro.
Apple says the new chip can deliver up to 40% faster graphics performance compared with its predecessor. It also includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and 50% higher memory bandwidth to support on-device AI workloads.
But the chip isn't working alone. Apple has redesigned the vapor chamber, giving it three times the surface area for heat dissipation. According to the company, this can deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous Pro model. And that distinction matters.
You may not notice a big difference when checking email, scrolling through social media, or browsing the web. The difference becomes more relevant when you're doing demanding tasks for longer periods, such as gaming, video editing, or running intensive AI workloads.
The iPhone 18 Pro runs on iOS 27, bringing new AI-powered features through Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.
The camera is where the iPhone 18 Pro starts to separate itself from the iPhone 17 Pro.
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, giving the camera something previous iPhones didn’t have: the ability to adjust how much light enters the lens. It can automatically choose the aperture based on the lighting and the depth of field you want – or you can take more control yourself.
The variable aperture offers four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. According to Apple, the ƒ/1.48 setting delivers around 50% better low-light performance, while the narrower ƒ/4.0 aperture can keep more of a scene in focus.
The iPhone 18 Pro brings new Pro controls for settings such as aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram. It also features Photographic Styles 3, which adds controls for texture and grain, giving you more ways to customize the look of your photos.
And it’s not just about still photos. Apple has added new video capabilities, including the ability to apply Cinematic effects after recording videos at up to 60 fps. Time-lapse also gets an upgrade, with support for 4K and Dolby Vision HDR.
The iPhone 17 Pro still has a very capable 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, including 48MP Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras. But the variable aperture and additional controls give the iPhone 18 Pro more flexibility for people who want to take their photography to the next level.
Battery life is another area where the iPhone 18 Pro gets a meaningful upgrade. According to Apple, the new Pro models deliver a major jump in battery life, thanks to redesigned batteries and improved efficiency from the A20 Pro chip. On eSIM-only models, the iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, which is three hours more than the iPhone 17 Pro.
The other big improvement is charging speed. The iPhone 18 Pro can reach up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes with a compatible fast charger, compared with around 20 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro.
That five-minute difference might not sound like much, but it can be surprisingly useful. If your battery is running low before you leave the house, a quick charge can give you much more power without making you wait around.
The iPhone 18 Pro also supports faster wireless charging, reaching up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a MagSafe Charger and a compatible 35W or higher adapter.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB of storage, which is $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro’s $1,099 starting price at launch. You can also get it with 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage, but these options cost more.
The iPhone 17 Pro is no longer part of Apple’s current iPhone lineup, but that doesn’t mean it's gone. You may still find it through retailers and other sellers, potentially at a lower price than when it first launched.
