Apple has finally entered the foldable phone market.
On September 9, 2026, Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. With a passport-style design, two displays, and new features designed around its foldable form, it is one of the biggest changes to the iPhone since its original launch.

What is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is a foldable smartphone that opens like a small book or passport. When closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display that you can use like a regular phone. Open it up and you get a much larger 7.6-inch inner display that resembles a small iPad.
But the Duo is about more than simply giving you a bigger screen. Its foldable design also brings new ways to use the camera, interact with apps, and move between the outer and inner displays.
With a starting price of $1,999, it is also Apple's most expensive iPhone yet. So, what exactly are you getting for that price?

Design and Build
The iPhone Duo features a passport-style foldable design that opens into a larger phone and folds down into a more compact shape. When unfolded, it measures just 0.21 inches thick, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple has made.
Apple built the iPhone Duo with a grade 5 titanium frame, giving the phone a premium finish while helping keep the foldable structure rigid.
The folding mechanism is another major part of the design. Apple developed a precision hinge with more than 100 components that controls how the phone opens and closes and helps support the center of the display when it is fully open. The hinge is designed to provide a smooth folding motion while keeping the phone securely closed.
Apple also moved away from Face ID on the iPhone Duo. Instead, the phone uses Touch ID built into the side button, allowing users to authenticate whether the Duo is open or closed.
The iPhone Duo is available in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.
Display
The iPhone Duo has two displays: a 5.4-inch outer screen for everyday use and a 7.6-inch inner screen that opens up when you need more space.
Both are Super Retina XDR OLED displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, HDR, Dynamic Island, and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. The larger display also features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections, making the crease almost unnoticeable.
The 7.6-inch inner display is also the largest ever included on an iPhone. It's designed for everything from watching videos and playing games to working across multiple apps at the same time. The iPhone Duo also supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), adding another way to use the inner display.
Together, the two screens let the Duo switch between a compact smartphone and a larger, tablet-like experience.
Performance
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. It includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, while the GPU is up to 40% faster and more power efficient.
The bigger display isn't only meant for watching videos. Apple has redesigned iOS 27 to take advantage of the Duo's foldable form factor. The larger screen gives users more space to work with multiple apps. Think about checking your messages while looking at a webpage, watching a video while keeping another app open, or setting the phone down for hands-free viewing.
The Duo also has a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture to help manage heat and performance inside the thin foldable design. That matters because the larger display is built for activities that can demand more from a phone, including gaming, multitasking, and AI-powered features.
Combined with Apple Intelligence and iOS 27, the A20 Pro gives the Duo the processing power needed to take advantage of its larger display and new foldable features.
Cameras
The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system with a main and an ultra-wide camera. For selfies and video calls, it has a 12MP Center Stage front camera on the outer display, while the inner display has an under-display FaceTime camera.
The iPhone Duo’s foldable design and dual displays enable camera features that aren’t available on other iPhone models, such as Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue, and Duo FaceTime.
With Smart Take, on-device AI models analyze the scene in real time and automatically capture photos when subjects are posing. With Duo Preview, the person taking a photo can show a live preview on the outer display. This can make it easier for people in front of the camera to see the framing and adjust their pose. Kid Cue uses playful animations on the outer display to help get children to look toward the camera. Duo FaceTime lets people nearby join a video call using the outer display.
The foldable design also lets you prop up the Duo without a tripod, which could be useful for group photos, longer videos, and hands-free recording.
For video, the main camera can record 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 frames per second, while Dual Capture lets users record from front and rear cameras simultaneously.
Battery and Charging
The iPhone Duo is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, with up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. Its dual-battery design helps fit a large battery capacity into the thin foldable body.
For charging, the Duo supports fast charging, reaching up to 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W or higher USB-C power adapter. It also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging.
Price
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage, making it the most expensive iPhone in Apple’s lineup. It is also available with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB of storage for users who need more space.
